  We placed our parents in the memory care unit which was completely understaffed. The facility is beautiful and much nicer for residents who are mobile and allowed use of the dining room and grounds. They have excellent chefs as the food was wonderful. Evening snacks were sometimes baked goods. Free access to juices. However, in memory care, my folks had dementia and alhiemers. My mom couldnt ask for a drink or verbalize so her needs were not met. They left her in a wheelchair everyday, all day without advising us she would need a thick pad. I repeatedly asked them to not leave in chair all day, to put her in an upholstered chair for relief. They never did. She developed 4-6 large pressure sores on her bottom and ankles/feet. The hole in her bottom was so big you could see her bone. When they finally did noticed her sores, they were so bad and she was so weak and under weight that she was taken to intensive care and we almost lost her. She stopped eating at Atria because she was in so much pain from sitting on these open sores all day with wet or soiled diapers &. went from 120 lbs to 80 lbs. Had to stay in a nursing facility for over 6 months while they treated the huge open sore and another 6 mos to finally heal. We were notified that she could not return after her trip to intensive care. We would have to find a new place for both of them as they dont allow residents with pressure sores. They just accepted that she was not interested in eating, rather than push her to eat. They changed her depends everyday, and showered her and yet did not notice or anticipate sores until it was at the worse possible stage and she was litterally dying from the downward spiral in her health. Absolutely, unforgivable neglect and understaffing in memory care unit. If your loved one cannot communicate, you have to check on them and be their voice. My mother almost died from neglect at Atria. They charge huge fees but dont provide appropriate staff . Profits, are more important than people at Atria!!!
